Summary

A propulsive new thriller set in London featuring Detective Harbinder Kaur from the author of the No 1 bestselling Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries。 A murderer hides in plain sight - in the police。

DS Cassie Fitzgerald has a secret - but it's one she's deleted from her memory。 In the 1990s when she was at school, she and her friends killed a fellow pupil。 Thirty years later, Cassie is happily married and loves her job as a police officer。

One day her husband persuades her to go to a school reunion and another ex-pupil, Garfield Rice, is found dead, supposedly from a drug overdose。 As Garfield was an eminent MP and the investigation is high profile, it's headed by Cassie's new boss, DI Harbinder Kaur。 The trouble is, Cassie can't shake the feeling that one of her old friends has killed again。

Is Cassie right, or was Garfield murdered by one of his political cronies? It's in Cassie's interest to skew the investigation so that it looks like the latter and she seems to be succeeding。

Favorite author, love her books!!

Always love reading Griffiths books, and Harbinder is a favorite character。 This was a really nice mystery with plenty of misdirection (but realistic。)

Excellent detective protagonist but middling crime fiction I enjoyed listening to this audiobook, especially the first half which features DI Harbinder Kaur。 I like Harbinder, who is a person of color and Sikh from Shoreham, West Sussex。 She passes her DI exams at aged thirty-eight, and transfers to the London Met, where she is a detective in the Homicide and Serious Crimes Unit。 She lives in West London in a shared flat w two other professional women。 She’s new to the city, doesn’t know culture Excellent detective protagonist but middling crime fiction I enjoyed listening to this audiobook, especially the first half which features DI Harbinder Kaur。 I like Harbinder, who is a person of color and Sikh from Shoreham, West Sussex。 She passes her DI exams at aged thirty-eight, and transfers to the London Met, where she is a detective in the Homicide and Serious Crimes Unit。 She lives in West London in a shared flat w two other professional women。 She’s new to the city, doesn’t know culture or landmarks, and must learn about various factions and neighborhoods。 I liked learning about the oddities of London with Karbinder。 She’s also working w a new-to-her team of detectives, which includes DS Jake Barker, DS Kim Manning, new DS Cassie Fitzherbert, a few DCs, a civilian data analyst, & a top flight pathologist。 Harbingers first case is a high profile murder at Manor Park, an upper class school, where former students gather for a 21 years reunion party。 The evening is interrupted when Garfield Rice, a Tory MP, is found dead in a loo—w cocaine on his nostrils。 Among the MP’s friends is DS Cassie Fitzherbert, who may know more than she remembers。 The mystery is decent, but author needs to better manage the past and present storylines。 Plus, the ending required a huge suspense of disbelief, due to the author’s chicanery—or slick artfulness—which left an unpleasant Deus ex machina aftertaste。 Please read this review with a shaker of salt, because other readers loved this book。 3。5 stars 。。。more

Wanted this to be stronger。 It was slow in too many parts。 Not as engaging as book 1 in the series。

Harbinder goes from strength to strength in this excellent novel。 Once again there are layers within layers of plot that make for a fascinating read I liked the central cast of characters in her new move to London。 A page Turner of a novel that gets 5* from me

Really clever, had me fooled all the way through it。 A group of classmates from a school for privileged teens preparing to enter college, a 21st reunion, a murder in both timelines, lots of surprises。 Harbinder shows some change in her personal life and remains a good police detective。

After the highs and lows of my last very powerful book, I like to head back to a cozy mystery to relax。 The cozy mystery has evolved: Detective Inspector Harbinder Kaur is a small, gay woman of Indian descent。 Miss Marple, welcome to 2022! I read everything "Elly Griffiths," aka Domenica De Rosa, writes and at this point reading her books seems like getting together with an old friend。 Domenica, call me。 I'll fly to Brighton and we'll do coffee。 After the highs and lows of my last very powerful book, I like to head back to a cozy mystery to relax。 The cozy mystery has evolved: Detective Inspector Harbinder Kaur is a small, gay woman of Indian descent。 Miss Marple, welcome to 2022! i'm amazed that elly griffiths' inventive mind has created three series: the magic men, ruth galloway, and harbinder kaur。* the last is the most contemporary in feel, and bleeding heart yard is my favorite of the three titles so far。 i hope there are more, especially since the galloway series may be coming to an end。* looks like there is yet another YA series featuring justice jones, but i've not been able to source them in the US。 i'm amazed that elly griffiths' inventive mind has created three series: the magic men, ruth galloway, and harbinder kaur。* the last is the most contemporary in feel, and bleeding heart yard is my favorite of the three titles so far。 i hope there are more, especially since the galloway series may be coming to an end。* looks like there is yet another YA series featuring justice jones, but i've not been able to source them in the US。 。。。more

I am a faithful reader of Elly Griffiths' series with Ruth Galloway and the Magic Men series。 I read the first two Harbinder Kaur books and found them delightful。 They were a step above the other series that Griffiths writes。 This third in the series was not quite as enjoyable。 Harbi (as her mother calls her) is still an interesting character, full of cleverness and likes and dislikes and some social insecurities。 The plot seems interesting at first, but the culmination left me a bit puzzled。 Bu I am a faithful reader of Elly Griffiths' series with Ruth Galloway and the Magic Men series。 I read the first two Harbinder Kaur books and found them delightful。 They were a step above the other series that Griffiths writes。 This third in the series was not quite as enjoyable。 Harbi (as her mother calls her) is still an interesting character, full of cleverness and likes and dislikes and some social insecurities。 The plot seems interesting at first, but the culmination left me a bit puzzled。 But I enjoyed the characters for the most part, though I thought the idea among The Group to recreate the crime scene was a bit much。 But without that setting, the villain would not have been revealed。 。。。more

I loved reading this one。 Now that Ruth Galloway is winding down, I really hope that Elly writes a new Harbinder Kaur book every year going forward。SPOILER ALERT。 STOP READING NOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS。Unfortunately, I think that there is a major flaw in the plot of Bleeding Heart Yard。 If David died of a gun-shot wound, wouldn't that wound have been found during the postmortem, and wouldn't that discovery have sparked a police investigation? a decent read marred by endingThis was quite a decent read albeit not intellectually challenging。 However, the ending makes little sense and appears to have been algorithmically tacked on。 Griffith needs a tougher editor。

I really enjoy Griffiths's method of writing these "Harbinder Kaur" mysteries。 In each one, Harbinder is one of several characters, not the sole focus, and as much as I like her, I also really like the perspectives from the other characters in the case。 Harbinder has moved to London and is heading her own team now that she's a DI。 The book centers around her first London case, a high-profile murder at a school reunion and the dynamic group of classmates involved。 Cassie, a police officer on Harb I really enjoy Griffiths's method of writing these "Harbinder Kaur" mysteries。 In each one, Harbinder is one of several characters, not the sole focus, and as much as I like her, I also really like the perspectives from the other characters in the case。 Harbinder has moved to London and is heading her own team now that she's a DI。 The book centers around her first London case, a high-profile murder at a school reunion and the dynamic group of classmates involved。 Cassie, a police officer on Harbinder's team, is one of the classmates and has a secret in her past that she's been hiding。 I definitely need to check out Griffiths's Ruth Galloway series。 。。。more

I saw this book on the New Release section of my library。 The cover and title caught my eyes。 Once I read plot and setting, I had to borrow it。 I feel like I devoured this book。 It is one of those “two can keep a secret if one of them are dead” story lines。 A haunted past brought to the forefront due to a high school reunion, murders, lies, accusations, and more, this book was extremely engaging。 I thought I had the mastermind pegged but boy was I wrong。 The twist shook me。 This was the first no I saw this book on the New Release section of my library。 The cover and title caught my eyes。 Once I read plot and setting, I had to borrow it。 I feel like I devoured this book。 It is one of those “two can keep a secret if one of them are dead” story lines。 A haunted past brought to the forefront due to a high school reunion, murders, lies, accusations, and more, this book was extremely engaging。 I thought I had the mastermind pegged but boy was I wrong。 The twist shook me。 This was the first novel I’ve read by the author。 I’ll be sure to pick up more。 The narrator of the audiobook was fantastic as well。 。。。more

It’s in Cassie’s interest to skew the investigation so that it looks like it has nothing to do with Manor Park and she seems to be succeeding。Until someone else from the reunion is found dead in Bleeding Heart Yard…Thoughts: I struggled to finish this one。 Personally, I have a hard time when the POVs are more than 2 people。 This was 4。 It was difficult to remember who was who, what the relationships they had with each other present and future。 I also thought the whole reason of why the murderer did what they did was dumb。 I love a good psychological thriller, but this didn't do it for me。 。。。more

4。5 rounded up to remind me how much better this series is than most of the mystery series I read。 What could have been a melodrama about schoolmates who haven't gotten over their senior year dramas was actually a very intriguing murder mystery with a varied assortment of characters。 There's also a great presentation of present day London culture which is a nice change from all the historic mysteries I've been reading。 4。5 rounded up to remind me how much better this series is than most of the mystery series I read。 What could have been a melodrama about schoolmates who haven't gotten over their senior year dramas was actually a very intriguing murder mystery with a varied assortment of characters。 There's also a great presentation of present day London culture which is a nice change from all the historic mysteries I've been reading。 。。。more

This is the first mystery by Ellie Griffiths that I've read, but it won't be the last。 It is the third installment in the Harbinder Kaur series but I read it as a standalone and had no problem at all。 I will definitely get the two preceding novels in this series。Harbinder Kaur is a Detective Supervisor and in charge of her unit。 She is both gay and a person of color which makes for some interesting interactions with both her staff and people at large。 Cassie Fitzherbert, a detective, works in Ka This is the first mystery by Ellie Griffiths that I've read, but it won't be the last。 It is the third installment in the Harbinder Kaur series but I read it as a standalone and had no problem at all。 I will definitely get the two preceding novels in this series。Harbinder Kaur is a Detective Supervisor and in charge of her unit。 She is both gay and a person of color which makes for some interesting interactions with both her staff and people at large。 Cassie Fitzherbert, a detective, works in Kaur's unit and Kaur is her boss。 The momentum starts at a 20th school reunion for Manor Park School。 Cassie is an alum of the school and is present at the reunion when Gary, an MP, and one of her past schoolmates, is found dead。 It looks like he overdosed on cocaine but Kaur wants an autopsy to rule out homicide。 The school is a public one and is known for the many successful alumnae it produces。 There is, however, a shadow over it。 Over twenty years ago, a student by the name of David was killed by an oncoming train。 Did one of 'the group' commit murder or was David's death an accident? Does David's death have any relation to these current deaths? The story is told in several voices, past and present。 All of the characters are fleshed out and unique。 My only issue was that there were so many characters that I had trouble keeping track of all of them。Chris has become a famous singer。 He and Anna were lovers in high school but he broke up with her at the end of the final term。 Anna teaches English in Italy and has come to London to care for her mother who has terminal cancer。 She and Chris still have strong chemistry。 Izzy is a famous actress, very histrionic and quite beautiful。 She and Gary had been a pair in school and were rekindling their romance despite the fact that Izzy is married。 Stephen is an MP who is killed shortly after Gary。 He is happily married to his husband who has no idea who could have killed him。 Cassie, as was said, is a police officer, put on leave for the duration of the investigation。 The writing is excellent and I loved the character driven aspect of the mystery。 Besides the six main characters, there are several others that are important to keep track of。 Ms。 Griffiths is great with red herrings and unless the reader is very perspicacious, the hints and tips will just fly by。 I would have rated this a five but for the huge number of characters。 I highly recommend the book and thank NetGalley and Mariner Books for the Advanced Reading Copy。 。。。more

Detective Harbinder Kaur has just moved to London。 She's now a Detective Inspector, and head of a murder squad。 When her first case turns out to be the death of a prominent politician at his high school reunion, little does she expect that a member of her team will be closely involved in the case。This was as enjoyable as the other mysteries in this series。 I wasn't sure that I would enjoy the London setting as much, but that wasn't an issue。 I did feel that the halfhearted attempt to pull in her Detective Harbinder Kaur has just moved to London。 She's now a Detective Inspector, and head of a murder squad。 When her first case turns out to be the death of a prominent politician at his high school reunion, little does she expect that a member of her team will be closely involved in the case。This was as enjoyable as the other mysteries in this series。 I wasn't sure that I would enjoy the London setting as much, but that wasn't an issue。 I did feel that the halfhearted attempt to pull in her old friends from the last book in the epilogue wasn't particularly successful, but perhaps if I had just read that book and was still feeling more of an emotional attachment to them, I would have liked it better。 All in all, a fun read。 I think this could be read as a stand-alone, due to the change of setting。 。。。more
